Beyond Komodo - A Season of Giants and Gentle Seas

Satonda Lake

Once each month the moon slips away, and for nine nights the sea takes on a different character. Plankton rises toward the surface, giants gather in the dark, and the water feels charged in a way that only happens during the dark moon. It is during these nights that we recommend a 9 night voyage Beyond Komodo, tracing a route from Komodo toward Sumbawa and into one of the most powerful wildlife windows in Indonesia.

The Dark Moon Expedition — 9 Nights | Komodo to Sumbawa

Whale Shark in Saleh Bay

As the light fades, the three giants of this region reveal themselves with remarkable clarity. Manta rays sweep through Komodo’s tidal channels, turning with the currents as if the water itself is guiding them. Komodo dragons move across ancient, ochre coloured islands, their silhouettes rising and falling with the land. And in the moonless waters of Sumbawa, whale sharks gather beneath the glow of distant bagan fishing lights, drawn upward by the plankton that lifts in the dark.

Encounters feel close, the ocean alive and raw. This is one continuous journey shaped by rhythm rather than rush, linking three icons of the archipelago without ever forcing a moment into view. Nature sets the pace, and we move with it.

Between these sightings the days unfold across landscapes that carry their own quiet beauty. Pink sand takes on a soft blush at sunrise. Coral gardens shimmer with life. Limestone bays open into sheltered pockets perfect for long swims, for paddleboarding, for the kind of stillness you only find far from shore.

Some evenings we transform a remote shoreline into the Kudanil Beach Club. Daybeds settle into the sand, shade stretches across the beach, and the light softens into gold as music drifts lightly in the background. It is barefoot, simple, and entirely present.

Beyond Komodo the coastline begins to sharpen. Sumbawa rises darker, carved by volcanic earth. Here an active underwater volcano waits below the surface, releasing warm bubbles through black sand. Corals bloom against basalt rock in clear, bright contrast, a reminder that the ground beneath these waters is very much alive.

As the Moon Brightens Again — Komodo to Alor

A luminous voyage of sandbanks, coral, villages and volcanoes.

Kelimutu Lake

As the moon returns to the sky, the sea shifts into long, calm streaks of silver, and the eastward passage opens into a landscape of changing shapes. Low tide reveals white sandbars curled like pale crescents across the water, while quiet turquoise anchorages invite afternoons spent snorkelling, kayaking, or simply watching the colour of the sea deepen and soften with the day.

Further along, volcanoes appear in sequence on the horizon — steep, distinct and often breathing gently into the evening sky. At times a faint glow rises from their peaks, visible from the deck as we sail past. Nothing dramatic, simply real, a steady presence in a region defined by fire and water.

In the Alor Strait the reefs brighten into extraordinary colour. Terraces rise, bommies stand tall, and schools of fish move through clear water as if pulled by the same invisible thread. Snorkelling here feels close and calm, a window into coral life shaped by currents and light.

Villages gather along the volcanic slopes, where weaving is still practiced by hand and the pace of daily life feels grounded. Stepping ashore means walking into a place that exists for itself, not arranged for guests. In these waters lives Mawar, a male dugong known in Alor, often resting quietly in the shallows where the sea grass grows thickest.

Komodo to Alor becomes a journey of coral, sand, volcano and village — shaped by warmth, by light, and by long open days on the water.
