As you may know already, the Kudanil Explorer is a real expedition yacht, an ocean-going vessel.
Now, while most of our trips venture around the calm and protected bays of regions such as Komodo National Park and Raja Ampat in Papua, offering world-class diving and snorkeling, some of our guests prefer to go exactly where others want to shelter from: The exposed seas of the Indian Ocean. As they say: “Only a surfer knows the feeling.”
It was a sunny morning in early September when we welcomed a mixed bag of international surf enthusiasts aboard. From beginner to world-class pros, it was quite an eclectic mix of guests and despite their different background and experience, the level of excitement was equally high for what was to come. The next 11 days we would explore the coastlines of Sumba, Savu & Rote, areas that are mostly very hard to reach by other by land or air and for which the Kudanil Explorer would present the perfect platform to explore. The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands at its best.
We started the trip in Sumba, an island south of the National Park known for its Pasola festival and unique architecture with iconically-shaped houses and megalithic tombstones. From there, we cruised East through the Savu Sea, and stopped at the islands of Raijua and Savu with their unique culture and traditions. Given its remote location and difficult access, the island is still quite untouched, far away from the hustle and bustle of Bali and almost any form of tourism.
We finished the trip around the island of Rote with its many surf breaks and wild pigs roaming the white-sandy beaches. The trip was truly spectacular but see for yourself, mind surf the breaks and re-live the trip through the words of Pete Gealle and eyes of Jack Johns.
